Best Friend Handbook Rule #1

If you find yourself in jail, it’s OK to call your best friend at any hour. Night or Day. In fact, it’s imperative.

I once had a friend who made an unfortunate U-turn after a night of grilled cheese and wine, and got herself arrested for a DUI. It was eventually thrown out of court (that’s another story), but on that night, she was arrested, and taken to the police station. Where she sat cuffed to a bench with some other ladies of the night (literally) before finally being released.

The next morning, when I called to complain about my hangover, she burst into tears and said “I was in jail.” My first thought was “Well, that certainly trumps my headache.” But my second was “Why in the hell didn’t you call me?” To which she replied, through gulps of tears, “Because it was 4am.”

Here’s the deal: I don’t like be awake at 4am. In my opinion, it’s a time to always be asleep. EXCEPT when your best friend is in jail.

Jail trumps sleep every time. So, I made it a Best Friend Handbook rule. Just in case anyone else wasn’t aware.

  1. I love this. It reminds me of this wonderful adage that goes,

A GOOD friend will bail you out of jail.

A BEST friend turns to you in the cell and says, “That was awesome.”

    🙂
